In shipping, break bulk cargo or general cargo are goods that must be loaded individually, and neither in shipping containers nor in bulk as with oil or grain. Break bulk cargo such as bags, loaded pallets, machinery and construction parts will be shipped by so-called general cargo ships.

Break bulk is all general cargo that due to the dimensions, weight or volume cannot fit into containers or be transported by standardized transport units.

Often break bulk are heavy lift goods. These goods can have a piece weight up to 80 tons or more. Cargo with this weight cannot be forwarded using standard equipment such as cranes, trucks, rail, barges or oceangoing vessels. It requires special equipment (loading devices) in order to ensure safe transport and smooth transhipment for the consignment.
